Tracking the potential for strong storms tonight, cooler end to the week
TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms after sunset. A few storms may become severe with the potential of strong winds, heavy rain, and large hail.
TOMORROW: Mostly cloudy with a few storms possible. Highs in the upper 80s to around 90.
EXTENDED: As a disturbance rolls along a stalled front draped across Mid-Missouri tonight, showers and storms are expected to develop. Storms will likely be isolated at first, becoming more numerous after 10:00 p.m. Some of these storms may become severe, with the threat of 60 mph winds, large hail, and a low threat for an isolated tornado. The severe threat eases overnight, with showers decreasing Friday morning. North of the front, temperatures remain in the 80s, while points south could once again make it into the 90s. I'm expecting that front to settle near or south of I-44, bringing most of the rain out of our area by Friday afternoon or evening. Cooler and drier air moves in from the north Friday night, clearing skies and leaving us with a much more comfortable start to the weekend as we reach the mid-80s. Sunday is a bit warmer, but humidity remains low. Next week starts off hot on Monday, but another front could bring a few showers and storms Monday night into Tuesday, and the upper pattern will shift quite a bit by the middle of the week. This will keep temperatures near average and humidity lower with dew points in the upper 50s to lower 60s. Another thing of note, the latest drought monitor has continued abnormally dry conditions across much of the state, and drought developing along the Missouri River in Boone and Cooper counties after a drier than normal June and start to July.
