Tracking a beautiful Mother’s Day and near-record heat this week

TODAY: Clouds return early with a small chance for light showers late morning. Skies shift to mostly sunny by the afternoon with highs in the upper 70s. Expect a steady breeze with gusts near 30 mph today.

TOMORROW: The warmup ramps up quickly with highs soaring to near 90. As moisture is pumped into the region, the heat index will rise to the mid-90s.

EXTENDED: A stable upper-level ridge pattern will drive the record warmth this week with nearly every day of the workweek in the 90s. Tuesday will likely be the warmest day in the low 90s with a heat index close to the triple digits. The ridge may weaken slightly midweek to drop temperatures a couple degrees, and this could also bring rain chances on Wednesday. Conditions look more disturbed late week as the pattern breaks down and showers and storms are possible heading into next weekend.
