Insider Blog: The good (warm) news amid a dangerous cold swing

As arctic high pressure slides in from the north on Tuesday, temperatures will fall in the single digits bringing us yet another run in with dangerous cold.

There is some good news in the forecast. We are rounding the corner off the coldest stretch of winter, at least with regard to historical averages. As of yesterday, our average high rounds to 40 degrees fahrenheit, officially bringing us out of our coldest average high of the year.

From there our expectations for seasonable temperatures will only climb.

A month from now, we'll be calling mid 40's seasonable, and looking ahead to highs in the mid 50s.

This of course comes as the northern hemisphere gets more sunlight as we get further away from the shortest day of the year, the winter solstice.

Today, we got about 10 hours under the sun. By the end of the month, we'll add another 15 minutes.

Still, dangerous cold can cause problems well into spring. So, it's important to remember to keep an eye on pets, people, and plumbing that may be vulnerable to the cold.
