Tracking dangerous heat to kick off the workweek

TODAY: A Weather Alert Day has been issued as brutal temperatures arrive this afternoon; the entire state of Missouri is under a Heat Advisory that lasts through Thursday evening. Highs reach the mid-90s and abundant humidity will push the heat index up to 105 degrees. Avoid spending time outdoors today and drink plenty of water.

THIS EVENING: Hot temperatures will aid in storm development in counties near I-44 early in the afternoon. Storms quiet down around dinnertime with another round moving through southern Missouri just before sundown. These storms will carry a low-end severe threat - watch out for damaging winds and isolated flooding tonight.

EXTENDED: Showers may continue overnight for areas near the Lake with a few rumbles of thunder. Tuesday is another Weather Alert Day with highs back in the mid-90s and a heat index well into the triple digits. Another line of potentially severe storms could move through the area Tuesday afternoon but it doesn't cool us off for long. Southerly winds will continue to funnel into mid-Missouri through Thursday to keep dangerous heat around. Wednesday and Thursday's highs are a tad cooler in the low 90s but the heat index could easily slip into the triple digits. Rain chances are scattered midweek and a weak cold front arrives on Thursday night to bring an end to the brutal heat. We get under high pressure through the weekend and highs will fall to the mid to upper 80s.
