Mother Nature’s wrath

Living in the midwest, we’re always told “when thunder roars, head indoors”. While this statement is a good thing to live by, lightning isn’t the only concern that comes with stormy weather.

Edward Biering was working to warn a neighbor that a tree branch was posing a threat to her car and family Sunday evening while those severe storms moved through. Before Edward could make it back to his home, he was injured by that same tree branch that was blown down by winds that were gusting up to 57 mph.

“I turned around as I left off the steps it cracked and then that’s  all I remember until I got to the hospital basically”

It’s not uncommon for tree damage to occur during storms. According to a study published by Dr. Kim D. Coder of the University of Georgia's Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, 40 mph winds can cause major swaying that leads to limb breakage. Winds of 90 mph can lead to “major tree failures”. In this case, these winds cause serious damage.

“It caused seven staples in the head, my spine was cracked in three places, my shoulder is messed up. Just not a good day.”

Now, luckily Edward turned out alright. He’s a little banged up but should make a full recovery, hopefully within the next few weeks. But, this serves as a reminder to both him and his family, neighbors, and everyone in the community that you should be taking shelter. Keep an eye out and always be aware, especially when severe weather is around.
