Tracking dangerous heat through Friday, humid weekend ahead

TONIGHT: Mostly clear and muggy with lows in the mid-70s.

TOMORROW: Mostly sunny and brutally hot with highs in the upper 90s. Heat index between 100-105. Stay hydrated and avoid long exposure outside in the heat if possible.

EXTENDED: Highs Friday top out in the upper 90s to around 100, with heat indices between 100-105. The record high in Columbia is 100F set back in 1953. I am also tracking a cold front that will stall out to our north tomorrow night and bring storms to far northern Missouri overnight into early Saturday morning, but I am not sold that it is going to make it too far south. If it does remain north of us, we'll see less of a rain chance through early Saturday and hotter temperatures for the weekend. If it moves a bit more south, we could end up with a few clouds and a couple storms Saturday morning. A few of these could be strong but the better severe risk Friday night into Saturday morning will be to our north. Highs reach the low to mid-90s both Saturday and Sunday with the heat index between 94-97. By Sunday night, that front finally begins to push south, bringing a chance for more widespread rain and storms Sunday night through Monday. There are some discrepancies between forecast models as far as the speed of the front on Monday, but for sure count on rain for the morning commute. Precipitation with this system will add up to about 1-1.5" of needed rainfall. We're more than 2" below average for the month of June, which has eaten at our surplus for the year.  Behind the front, temperatures fall into the lower 80s Monday with upper 70s to around 80 expected Tuesday and Wednesday in the wake of the front. We could see a few showers on Wednesday, but outside of that next week is looking much nicer and more comfortable.
