Tracking a rare late April snow

MONDAY: A terrific start to the week! Temperatures will make it into the middle 60’s early this afternoon before backing up into the 50’s by the evening commute. We’ll be cloud-free to start but they’ll increase heading into the afternoon as a cold front moves through. Winds will turn northwesterly and could gust up to 25 mph at times throughout the day.

TONIGHT: The cold air continues to push in overnight with lows falling to the middle 30’s. Precipitation will be lagging behind the front, and looks to hold off until close to sunrise Tuesday morning.

EXTENDED: That precipitation will hold off long enough to come down in the cold air. That means snow looks likely tomorrow morning as many of us will head off to work or school. It will enter the viewing area around 5-6 AM, and close in on Columbia and Jefferson City closer to 7-9 AM. As this comes down, it could snow harder than we can melt it, leading to some slushy roads for brief periods. The snow will eventually turn into a cold rain closer toward midday before departing. Skies will clear out into the overnight hours, so temperatures will plummet into the upper 20’s. You’ll want to bring any of those sensitive plants in or cover them up once again before Wednesday morning. Highs on Wednesday bounce back into the low 50’s, but another near freezing night looks to be in store. By Thursday we get far enough away from the freezing mark but will be tracking more rain chances overnight. Those showers look to be centered around Friday afternoon and evening but could spill over into the start of the weekend.
