Tracking a chilly New Year’s Eve with an icy night to follow

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy with lows in the low 20s.

TOMORROW: Partly to mostly cloudy and chilly with highs in the mid-30s.

EXTENDED: A Weather Alert Day is in effect for New Year's Eve into New Year's Day as we'll be tracking the threat for icy conditions. Another low pressure system tracking in from the south will push precipitation in our direction Thursday night through Friday, starting off as rain south, and changing over to a wintry mix as it moves north. A glaze to 0.1" of ice will be possible through Friday morning for the Lake of the Ozarks area, increasing to potentially 0.2" near Jefferson City and Columbia. Areas across northwest and western Missouri could get anywhere from a quarter-inch to 0.3" of ice through midday Friday as freezing rain continues to move through. Dangerous travel conditions are expected for much of the area Friday morning, especially if cold temperatures stick around and ice takes longer to melt off surfaces. We warm into the upper 30s to around 40 by afternoon, but any wet spots may refreeze as we drop into the 20s again Friday night. Saturday is mostly cloudy with a chance for a few light snow showers that will be less impactful as accumulation should stay under a half-inch. We warm Sunday into next week as high temperatures get into the 40s.
