Breaking down November’s wild weather swings in mid-Missouri

Today's Severe Weather

A wicked cold front was responsible for big changes in our weather today. After a week of above normal temperatures, severe storms and strong westerly winds brought all of that to a halt.

Reports of damage were isolated across mid-Missouri, but it was a menacing sight for many has blinding rain and 50-60 mph winds push into the region.

A strong blocking area of high pressure across the southeast was the perfect fuel up against a strong push of cold, dry air from the north. Along with an upper-level trough, everything came together with a compact mid-latitude cyclone (the comma-shaped storm) bringing a heavy swath of snow to the central and northern plains, and severe weather from Sedalia to Chicago.

365 days ago... record-breaking snow

And in true mid-Missouri fashion... it was exactly 365 days ago that our weather-team was tracking record-breaking Veteran's Day snowfall. Not only that, temperatures dropped well into the teens the following evening too. The following day, we only managed to get into the mid-20s!

It's often this month we see these big clashes of warm, moist air against cold, dry Canadian air. These two air masses kinda hate each other... a lot--and their frequent collision in November is a perfect recipe for everything from severe weather to winter storms in mid-MO.

The National Weather Service has compiled a list and a series of write-ups on some more notable extreme November weather events in Missouri and Illinois.
