Tracking showers and storms before more activity this week

TODAY:

Showers and storms at today's onset will push southeast, and stall. The boundary driving them will settle far enough to our southeast to remove the severe threat for us today, but not far enough to dry us out completely. By 9am, most are dry, especially those north of I-70, and west of I-44. By late morning and afternoon, the main chance for showers and a few rumbles of thunder will focus along and south of a line from Warsaw to Vienna. These areas will struggle to warm, with highs expected in the upper 50's. To the north and west, skies will have an opportunity to clear, allowing sunshine to push temperatures into the 60's. Effectively the midpoint for all of this; Columbia's forecast high sits at 61.

TONIGHT:

Tonight, the lingering moisture and cloud cover has the opposite effect, keeping those underneath it relatively warm. By sunrise, the aforementioned boundary lifts back north, overspreading the area with a lot of low clouds, drizzle, and possibly even light showers.

EXTENDED:

This clears out through midday, and allows temperatures to warm into the upper 70's Tuesday afternoon. A large system sitting over the Midwest, will charge the atmosphere with moisture and potential storm energy, but a cap in place will try to keep storms at bay for much of the day. If this part of the forecast holds, the rest of Tuesday will be dry. We'll have to watch for any changes to the forecast on that front, but in addition to that, we'll likely have a disturbance over southeast Missouri that may try to bring a storm or two in our direction. With that being said, the best chance for storms with this system will be along a cold front that will slide in from the west overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning. All types of severe weather will be possible with this line. We'll have to watch this setup for the potential for severe hail, damaging winds, and even tornadoes. Stay tuned for more information, as this next system may warrant a Weather Alert Day.
