Tracking dangerous heat the rest of the week alongside chances for thunderstorms

TODAY: Wednesday could see a break in our extreme heat, with a chance for afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Today will start warm and dry, but storms are likely to move in from the north shortly after sunrise, before spreading south through midday. This will likely take the sting out of the heat and humidity for most north of I-70, but relief could stretch as far south as the Highway 50 corridor. The exact extent of cooler air this afternoon is highly uncertain as it depends heavily on individual showers and clouds. We'll likely see a weakening trend with thunderstorms as they move south and remove themselves from the greatest wind support in the atmosphere. Still, some gusty winds are possible with storms from morning into the early afternoon. The greatest threat will be in the north and east. Heat indexes may still reach near 105 or higher along and south of I-70 today.

TONIGHT: Skies are expected to mostly clear tonight, as precipitation winds down with sunset. This will give you an opportunity to catch the Perseids Meteor shower tonight. Peak activity is expected tonight and again Thursday night.

EXTENDED: Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are ABC17 Stormtrack Weather Alert Days, as each day brings potential for dangerous heat, despite limited rain chances. A stalled front to our north will keep daily storm chances through Thursday and Friday. Saturday appears drier as the front lifts northward. Any storms on Thursday and Friday bring a slight chance of severe winds, but the threat is low. Heat will impact all of us through at least Friday, with potential for dangerous heat again on Saturday. Potential for lower humidity on Saturday is keeping us from extending our Weather Alert Days for now. A cold front brings rain chances on Sunday and a more pronounced break in the heat.
