Tracking a week long heat wave

TODAY: It's another toasty day, with highs in the 90s and heat indexes in the 100-105 degree range. Temperatures will be nearly identical to Sunday's, if not a degree or two warmer. Winds from the south will again be gusty, sustained around 10-15 mph, gusting as high as 25 mph at times. Mostly sunny skies are expected.

TONIGHT: Temperatures and dewpoints are forecast in the 70s at the coolest overnight, but we're still hot at sunset. Temperatures likely won't fall from the 80s until after midnight.

EXTENDED: Heat and humidity are here for the long haul, and it has yet to peak. We expect the hottest days to be Tuesday through Thursday, and possibly Friday. For now, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are ABC17 Stormtrack Weather Alert Days as heat indexes may reach 105-110. Small increases in temperature alongside continued mid-70 degree dewpoints will make these days feel slightly hotter. This comes as the upper-level ridge brings the heat dome squarely overhead. The ridge weakens and shifts east on Friday, but if we can stay dry, it may be slightly warmer with southerly low-level winds returning. However, this opens us up to more clouds and rainfall as the suppressing effects of the heat dome slide east. This will give us spotty chances for showers and storms Friday through Sunday, with the greatest chances on Sunday. High temperatures remain forecast in the 90s through the weekend.
