Tracking a return to arctic air and a chance for accumulating snow by the weekend
TODAY: Tuesday is one of the warmest days this week, but it won't feel like it this morning. Wind chills are in the low single digits this morning, as south winds are light. South winds and mostly sunny skies will climb temperatures into the 40s with time today.
TONIGHT: A cold front will clip the region tonight, bringing a quick drop into the 20s to low 30s overnight, and a few clouds. These clouds begin to clear around daybreak, and south winds are quick to return.
EXTENDED: With the return of south winds, highs land near 40 again, for a nearly identically mild day on Wednesday. Thursday will be slightly cooler, with highs in the 30s thanks to cold front that passes through Wednesday night. A stronger cold front nudges in from the north on Friday morning. This will likely onset the return of extreme cold Friday. This cold is expected to last through Saturday, and possibly into Sunday. Highs are forecast near 20 Friday morning, 10 Saturday afternoon, and 20 Sunday afternoon. Exact numbers will change, but the magnitude and lifespan of this next cold spell will likely remain mostly unchanged. This arctic high will complicate another weekend element; our snow forecast. Currently, there remain limited chances for snow Friday and Saturday. Depending on how far this incoming cold and dry airmass can push our cold front south, we may see measurable snow or nothing at all. Overall, our chance for snow starts midday Friday, and lasts through Saturday night. Our best chance for snow looks to come on Saturday and south of HWY 50. Still, many changes are expected, and we are still within the window that could erase snow chances for some, if not all of us. Stay tuned to the forecasts regarding the weekend. And consider how you'd alter travel plans, especially to the south of mid-Missouri, should accumulating snow impact the region.
