Tracking a potent cold front and a chance for rain
TODAY: Sunday is an active weather day, with rain and thunder ahead of a cold front that will make for a windy and cold evening. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected through sunrise, mostly north of I-70. A cold front will pass through the region from the late morning to the early afternoon, arriving near Columbia around noon. This may produce weak showers to marginally strong thunderstorms. Confidence is low in precipitation along this line at all. The front itself is strong, meaning it could make use of the few ingredients available to it to produce gusty winds and weak rotation. We do not have high expectations for severe weather, as it looks overall unlikely in mid-Missouri. These storms will intensify as the leave towards St. Louis, if they can form at all.
TONIGHT: The reason today is an ABC17 Stormtrack Weather Alert Day really boils down to the wind with the passing cold front. This wind will be strong, gusting to 40+ mph at times, and usher in deep cold overnight. We expect temperatures to peak in the upper 60s around noon, and fall to near freezing by the dinner hour.
EXTENDED: The ABC17 Stormtrack Weather Alert Day extends into Monday AM when we feel subzero windchills in some locations. The rest of the forecast is seasonal, with highs in the 20s Monday, 30s Tuesday, and 40s generally from Wednesday through Saturday. We expect dry weather Monday onward.
