Tracking a nearing end to the heat

TODAY: Monday is another ABC17 Stormtrack Weather Alert Day, as high temperatures are once again expected in the upper 90s. This and a stubborn dew point in the low 70s will yield heat indexes in the 105-108 range today. Exercise caution outdoors, and hydrate early and often to avoid heat stroke or exhaustion. Few pop up storms this afternoon may bring some limited relief, but also the strongest storms may bring a threat for damaging winds.

TONIGHT: Another warm night is ahead, with lows and dewpoints in the low-to-mid 70s. Skies will dry up with sunset, but a few storms could linger into sunset. North of HWY 24, we could see a few showers and storms left over from evening activity in Iowa.

EXTENDED: Tuesday, after a few morning showers, we will be warm and muggy. This kicks off a hot and humid start to the day. However, an approaching cold front will slowly turn winds from the north and bring chances for scattered storms. At this point, while Tuesday is expected to be hot, we expect to remain cooler than Monday. Heat indexes are still likely topping 100 midday Tuesday before relief arrives. Wednesday brings spotty morning rain chances, but as clouds and rain chances clear, so will humidity and warmth. We expect highs in the 80s and dewpoints in the 60s leaving us feeling like low 90s on Wednesday. Mostly sunny skies are expected Thursday through the weekend, with highs generally expected in the 80s each day. Another push of cooler air could come with a second cold front at the end of the weekend, that could leave us slightly cooler and/or drop humidity another degree into early next week.
