Tracking a few showers and flakes Thursday evening and a weekend winter storm
TODAY: Thursday will be disappointing for snow lovers. If you're hoping for a fresh coat of white, you don't get it today, but just hold on. We will be mild today, considering where the forecast takes us over the weekend. Expect a high in the low 40s this afternoon, with clouds and a south wind most of the day. A cold front will move through this afternoon and evening, and with it will come a chance for rain and snow showers. At best these are some melty wet flakes. For most, this will be a cold rain with a few flakes mixing in at times. In either case, we are left with no accumulation other than mud on the bottom of your shoes.
TONIGHT: Temperatures fall into the 20s tonight, so some may have frost to deal with on the car in the morning if you park in a low lying and wind protected area.
EXTENDED: Friday is cooler, with a high near freezing, BUT with more sunshine. Saturday will be about as cold, with increasing clouds through the day. This is where things get interesting for snow and winter lovers all together. We'll have a chance for afternoon snow in the south and west, with our next surface low approaching. Precipitation chances only increase into the night, as the low moves in to make for a messy Sunday. I chose the word precipitation carefully as we'll see this likely start as snow, but quickly transition to a mixed and potentially icy precip as the night goes on. This system will continue with snow, sleet, and freezing rain across the region through Sunday, before tapering off with a few snow showers likely Monday morning. This is the rough framework of our expectations. While many details are still being pinned down, it's very likely that arctic air settles in early next week behind the low, keeping highs in the teens and lows even colder. This system is expected to bring widespread travel impacts, but exactly what kind remain uncertain. Be on the look out for our ABC17 Stormtrack Insider Blog in the coming days.
