Insider Blog: Global temperature records broken as the year trends above-average

Multiple days this past week saw record-breaking heat, as the global average temperature reached a new peak on Monday, then again on Tuesday, with that record also tied again on Wednesday. This record is based on global averages, and while not all regions may be above-average, conditions locally have also been trending warmer.

For the year so far, 5 out of the past 6 months have seen above-average temperatures in Mid-Missouri. This was especially pronounced in te wintertime, where temperature departure was nearly 7 degrees above normal. This trend is also seen long term, as Central Missouri is seeing increasing days of 90+ degree heat. Four additional days (or two of your summer weekends) have seen 90-degree temperatures in Mid-Missouri over the past 30 years, and this warming trend could continue to bring more instances of record-breaking heat.
