Tracking afternoon thunderstorms on Mother’s Day

TODAY: Thunderstorms return in better coverage over mid-Missouri this afternoon. There will be a lot of dry time this morning, but by early afternoon, storms will start to develop in a very isolated to widely scattered fashion. This means there will still be plenty of dry spots between storms, but your proximity to these storms will be close enough to warrant attention to the radar if you have outdoor plans. Lightning will be a risk to outdoor plans even outside of thunderstorms, and within the storms themselves, we have potential for hail and gusty winds with the strongest storms. Widespread severe weather is not expected, but this is worst case scenario with the strongest storms. Temperatures will be warm again, reaching mid-80s.

TONIGHT: Storms will weaken and die with sunset. Expect temperatures to fall into the upper 50s by Monday morning, with broken clouds left from Sunday's storms.

EXTENDED: Showers will be lingering early Monday, before storms redevelop by late morning and early afternoon. As a cold front slowly drops through mid-Missouri, we'll see the area of development shift further south, shifting thunderstorm chances mostly south of I-70 by Monday afternoon. This will also usher in cooler air, keeping temperatures areawide much cooler, with highs near 70 in Columbia and Jefferson City, and those near the lake and I-44 in the low 70s. Rain chances shift from the north to the south through the day Monday, leaving us dry by Tuesday. Partly cloudy skies are expected Tuesday, with cooler air leaving us in the upper 70s for highs. We climb to near 80 under mostly sunny skies on Wednesday, with dry weather staying through most of Thursday as well. A cold front looks to arrive late Thursday night and bring rain into early Friday morning. This keeps us in the 70s heading into next weekend.
