Tracking more rain that will shield some from the extreme heat

TODAY: Showers and thunderstorms are moving into mid-Missouri early this morning. Heavy rain, lightning, and thunder will persist well into the daylight hours as this complex of storms pushes through. This round looks to largely favor communities along and north of I-70. This will likely have a big impact on temperatures today, keeping those north of the interstate in the 80s and low 90s this afternoon. To the south, broken cloud cover will allow more sun to heat us up. Temperatures will climb to the upper 90s, bringing back the potential for feels like temperatures between 100-105 degrees. A Weather Alert Day has been issued for this afternoon's extreme heat, and an excessive heat warning remains in effect until 11 p.m. tonight. This morning's rain will come to an end by the early afternoon, but an isolated storm is possible south of I-70 during the peak heating of the day.

TONIGHT:

The air keeps a muggy feel tonight with temperatures hanging in the 70s, but the rain generally lets up. That is at least until the early morning hours on Friday. Before sunrise, we may see another round of storms try to move in.

EXTENDED:

This area-wide band of showers and storms will bring a weak cold front through the region. After the rain moves through Friday morning, we'll be left with cooler air, and a northerly breeze. We should see highs in the 80s Friday through Sunday, with steadily dropping dew points. More sunshine returns for the weekend. By Monday, temperatures start to climb again, putting us back in the 90s ahead of a chance for rain on Tuesday.
