Mizzou softball and baseball sweep home openers

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Both the Mizzou softball and baseball teams came away with wins in their home openers on Friday night.

The softball team dominated St. Thomas University in run-rule fashion, 13-0 in five innings. The Tigers tossed a combined no-hitter in the win, while smashing nine extra-base hits. Jordan Weber only pitched for three innings, but she retired all nine of the batters she faced.

Kara Delay, Brooke Wilmes, and Casidy Chaumont all homered in the matchup.

The baseball team held off a late rally from Tarleton State to take a 6-5 win at Taylor Stadium. Head coach Steve Bieser and company had to reach into the bullpen after junior lefty Nathan Landry gave up three earned runs, but the duo of Tony Neubeck and Austin Cheely closed it out.

Lee's Summit-native freshman Cam Careswell had the team-high three RBI in the win.

Up next - both teams will continue the home stand on Saturday. The baseball team will do battle with Tarleton State at 2 p.m. and the softball team has two games. The Tigers will face Bradley at 10 a.m. and then St. Thomas right after that game ends.
