Tracking light snow showers tonight, bitterly cold air this weekend

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy with light snow showers, mainly along and north of I-70. Lows near 10 degrees. New snow accumulation between a dusting and 1".

TOMORROW: Mostly cloudy with some morning flurries possible. Highs in the upper teens to around 20.

EXTENDED: By the weekend, I'll be tracking another front that will move through the area Friday night into Saturday. This could bring another chance of snow showers after midnight Friday through early Saturday afternoon. Calculating our snow ratios to be between 10 to 15:1, I think any accumulation would be under an inch, and most likely confined to north/northwest MO early on Saturday. Behind the front, we'll see our coldest air of the season with lows falling 5 to 10 degrees below zero by Sunday morning. Wind chills will fall to about 5 to 10 degrees below zero on Saturday, and even colder on Sunday, with sustained wind chills between 15 to 20 degrees below zero. This is where another Weather Alert Day comes into play. We could end up with another stronger storm system late Sunday into Monday that could be impactful.

A more organized low pressure system is expected to move into the Midwest early on Monday through early Tuesday, but there is still plenty of uncertainty on the track. The amount of moisture with it certainly considerable compared to what we have been dealing with the last week. If this ends up tracking over Mid-MO, we could end up with inches of accumulation. We'll have plenty of time to iron that one out, so for now we will focus on the light snow tonight and dangerous temperatures this weekend.

The colder than average air looks to stick around through late next week, with a potential break by the weekend.
