Central Missouri Human Society suspends intake of dogs for at least two weeks amid outbreak

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Central Missouri Humane Society announced in a press release that it is struggling with an outbreak of canine upper respiratory infections.

Canine pneumovirus is contagious for dogs, but is not transferable to humans or cats, according to the press release. Signs of the virus may include coughing, discharge from the eyes or nose and abnormal breathing.

To stop the spread of illness, CMHS will be suspending intake services for dogs for at least the next two weeks, according to the press release.  CMHS and Columbia/Boone County Animal Control will assist with intake emergencies only.

CMHS is asking the public for their help to reunite lost and found dogs. It will be open to scan for microchips. It also announced that adoption fees have been lowered to $20 for all dogs 30 pounds and heavier until Friday, Jan. 20.
