Two women settle federal lawsuit with MU over Title IX complaints targeting basketball player

KMIZ

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ) -

Two women who sued the University of Missouri in 2019 over its handling of their Title IX complaints have settled with the school before trial.

The two people -- identified in court only as Jane Doe 1 and 2 -- made the agreement to drop the lawsuit on Oct. 7. The two will receive $400,000 as part of the settlement, according to a copy of the document obtained by ABC 17 News through an open records request.

The women were set to go to trial in federal court with the school the month prior.

The women sued the school in 2019, claiming the university didn't follow its rules for conducting Title IX hearings over complaints made against former Missouri men's basketball player Terrence Phillips. Doe 1 claimed Phillips stalked her, while Doe 2 claimed she was raped by him. Hearing panels cleared Phillips in both cases.

The settlement said the two could not bring any other claims against the university regarding its handling of the cases.

The lawsuit claimed university officials improperly handled the complaints lodged against Phillips in 2018. Filings in the case claim university officials either used the wrong contact information, or gave short notice to the two plaintiffs.

Attorneys also argued the school chose not present Phillips' case at a single hearing to show a possible pattern of misconduct. They argued this "resulted in hearings that could only turn out in their male star athlete’s favor."

Phillips was removed from the men's basketball team in February 2018.
