Man in custody identified after an officer-involved shooting in downtown Columbia
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ) -
The Columbia Police Department said one man is in police custody after a shooting downtown around 11:20 p.m. on Saturday.
An officer observed one adult male brandishing and discharging a firearm. The officer fired his Department-issued service weapon at the suspect. The suspect, Christopher Michael Sledd, 51 of Columbia, surrendered to the officer with no further incident.
Columbia Police Public Information Officer Jeff Pitts said one officer exchanged gunfire with the suspect, after the suspect fired shots.
Police crews on scene also confirmed on scene no one was injured as a result of the shooting. While processing the scene, members of the Department’s Criminal Investigations Division located property damage.
Police had more than a dozen evidence markers along the north sidewalk of East Broadway near Hitt Street. Crime scene tape extended from Jimmy John's to FieldHouse.
Police Chief Geoff Jones said the Department continues to staff downtown with patrol officers. “In the interest of improving safety and stability at all times, we are working with all of our community partners to address safety concerns,” Jones said.
Pitts said he did not have any information regarding if Saturday's shooting was in any way related to other recent shootings in downtown Columbia.
Sledd was arrested for felon in possession of a firearm, first-degree assault, first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon as well as an outstanding arrest warrant. He was remanded to the custody of the Boone County Jail.
