Kansas City Chiefs fans optimistic, looking ahead to next season after Super Bowl loss
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
Kansas City Chiefs fans have not lost faith in their team.
The Chiefs fell to the Philadelphia Eagles 40-22 in Super Bowl 59 in New Orleans Sunday evening.
The Chiefs were looking to make history and become the first team in the NFL to win three straight Super Bowls.
Thousands of fans packed into the Power & Light District in Kansas City on Sunday hours before the Super Bowl in anticipation of witnessing history. The Eagles quickly started to pull away from the Chiefs, leading 24-0 heading into the second half.
Fans held out hope for the Chiefs and braved the cold out at the Power and Light District until the very last minute of the game. Many said they believed the Chiefs would climb back into things in the second half.
When it became clear the deficit was too much for even the reigning champions to overcome, fans' mindsets began to switch toward looking ahead to next season and the success of the team this season.
"We were very upset about how Patrick Mahomes played and Travis Kelce for dropping the ball twice," Chiefs fan Kim Atkinson said. "We're going to be right back because we know that they're going to figure it out and come out a winner."
Fans had been partaking in the festivities by playing games provided, and listening and dancing to live music.
Last week, P&L District Senior Account Executive Savannah Otto said that the district plans for this weekend year-round.
Owner of Johnny’s Tavern, Kyle Witherspoon – whose business is next to Power and Light – said last week that he anticipated a big crowd for the game.
