Chiefs’ Andy Reid looks to enter rare air of NFL coaches with Super Bowl 59 win
NEW ORLEANS (KMIZ)
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has already done the work to cement his legacy as one of the best to do it in league history, leading Kansas City on a historic championship run over the past few years, however, on Sunday he has an even bigger opportunity.
With a win in the Super Bowl 59 matchup against his former Eagles team, Coach Reid would move up to second all-time in Lombardi Trophy wins for coaches, tying former Steelers great Chuck Noll. The only name he'd be chasing in the years to come would be his old friend, former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who won the league-best six Super Bowls.
"That's not part of it," Reid said. "I enjoy teaching...I don't get caught up too much in all the stats and all the records and all that stuff. I enjoy being around the guys, I enjoy football, the game. You can't put in the hours that we do and not enjoy it."
Throughout the lead up to kickoff in New Orleans this week, Big Red's players made it clear why he is so beloved.
"He's like a father figure to me," tight end Travis Kelce said. "He's like, I don't know, one of my uncles growing up that I respect so much because of who he is. I owe everything to that man in my career and where it's gone."
Coach Reid creates a culture of family and winning that courses through the facility, even through tough training camps, practices and all the ups and downs of a season.
"It's about winning. It doesn't matter how it's done, it's about coming to work every single day and leaving it all on the football field and winning football games," quarterback Patrick Mahomes said.
Reid sure has done a lot of winning over the course of his career, too. He's the winningest head coach in both Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs history, as the only head coach in league history to record more than 100 wins with two franchises.
In tandem with Mahomes and his playmakers, Reid has led the Chiefs on one of the most historic Super Bowls runs the NFL has ever seen. The team has made it to five of the last six Lombardi Trophy game and will look to achieve another feat against the Eagles on Sunday.
With a win, KC will be the first team to ever win three-straight Super Bowls, achieving the near-impossible.
Kansas City and Philadelphia will kick off Super Bowl 59 in New Orleans at 5:30 p.m. on Fox 22.
