Chiefs travel road to New Orleans to attempt historic Super Bowl three-peat
NEW ORLEANS (KMIZ)
The Kansas City Chiefs arrived in New Orleans on Sunday to accomplish something no other NFL team has.
The team landed at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans InternationalĀ Airport at 4 p.m. Sunday to begin a week of festivities and practices ahead of Super Bowl 59. The Chiefs will participate Monday night in the Super Bowl Opening Night ceremony at the Caesars Superdome.
The Chiefs will play the Philadelphia Eagles for the league's title on 5:30 p.m. Feb. 9. The game will air on Fox, a rematch of Super Bowl 57 where the Chiefs bested the Eagles in a 38-35 thriller. That Super Bowl marked the first of the Chiefs' back-to-back titles, and the team's third in five years.
A third straight Super Bowl win would mark the first time an NFL team has accomplished the feat in the league's history. Across sports, the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA completed the last championship three-peat from 2000-2002.
New Orleans has played host to Super Bowl history for Missouri teams. The Chiefs won Super Bowl IV at Tulane Stadium in 1970 against the Minnesota Vikings. The St. Louis Rams tried to win a second Super Bowl in three years in 2002 but fell short by an Adam Vinatieri field goal for the New England Patriots. The win was the first for quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick, launching the franchise's two-decade dynasty.
ABC 17 News and Fox 22 will have live coverage of the Road to New Orleans all week. ABC 17 sports director Nathalie Jones and news anchors Meghan Drakas and Lucas Geisler will show you the action in the Big Easy and give updates on the Chiefs as the team prepares for a three-peat. Let us know if you plan on coming to New Orleans for the game.
