Chiefs overcome adversity in pursuit of second straight Super Bowl title

Kansas City's most recent trip to football's biggest stage was a bit different than its last three paths to the Super Bowl. The Road to Las Vegas was a bumpy one for the Chiefs, forcing Kansas City to overcome many unfamiliar challenges compared to the rest of the Patrick Mahomes era.

Despite losing on opening night of the 2023 NFL season to the Detroit Lions, the Chiefs strung together six straight victories enroute to a 7-2 start to their campaign. However, adversity struck in the second half of the regular season. Kansas City lost four of its final eight regular season games, encountering struggles on the offensive side of the ball.

Once the postseason arrived, the Chiefs overcame that adversity to begin playing some of their best football in January. As a No. 3 seed in the postseason, Kansas City cruised past Miami in the Wild Card round and proceeded to win its first two road playoff games since Mahomes took over as the team's starting quarterback.

"Yeah, I think it's just the process, just continuing to work hard. Obviously, we had some struggles throughout the season, but guys, they never hung their head," Mahomes said during Super Bowl LVIII week. "They just continued to grind through and that caused us to play our best football at the right time."

Kansas City will look to become the first franchise in nearly two decades to win back-to-back Super Bowls when kickoff arrives on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m.
