Cardinals swept in Chicago, endure four-game losing skid at season’s end

CHICAGO, Ill. (KMIZ)
The Cardinals have ended their season with a losing record for just the second time since 2007.
St. Louis (78-84) surrendered a series sweep against the Chicago Cubs (92-70) with a 2-0 loss in its season finale at Wrigley Field. With Sunday's loss, manager Oliver Marmol's team suffered defeats in its final four games of the 2025 campaign.
The Redbirds fell short of a spot in the postseason, ending their 162-game marathon with a fourth place finish in the division standings and five games behind the Cincinnati Reds for the National League's final wild card spot.
Chicago supplied both its runs in the fifth and seventh innings, respectively. Seiya Suzuki hit his 32nd home run of the season to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead, and then, Moises Ballesteros added to that advantage with an RBI single to drive home Kevin Alcantara.
St. Louis was limited to just six hits, finishing 0-5 with runners in scoring position. Javier Assad pitched 5.1 shutout innings, giving up just three hits and striking out six batters. Chicago's bullpen also tossed 3.1 clean innings, highlighted by three shutout frames from Jordan Wicks, who posted four strikeouts.
Jordan Walker and Victor Scott II paced the Cardinals at the plate, posting two hits each. Jimmy Crooks and Nathan Church also recorded one hit.
The Cardinals will regroup this offseason under new president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom, aiming to end their three-year playoff drought during the 2026 season.
