Cardinals get swept by Diamondbacks in first series back from All-Star break

PHOENIX, Ariz. (KMIZ)

The St. Louis Cardinals kicked off the second half of the 2025 season just about the worst way that you could, getting swept by the Arizona Diamondbacks in a 5-3 loss, on Sunday.

Skipper Oli Marmol's pitching staff struggled through three games at Chase Field, giving up a combined 22 runs. Sunday's outing from starter Miles Mikolas didn't yield better results, either. The right-hander continued a rough month, giving up five earned runs on four hits through four innings of work. Over the course of the last 30 days, Mikolas' ERA sits a 6.97, as he's given up 17 runs in about 20 innings.

Arizona drew first blood, quickly. Courtesy of a Geraldo Perdomo RBI single and a Eugenio Suarez 425-foot three-run homer, the Diamondbacks got up by four runs in the first inning alone.

St. Louis was able to respond in the third inning with an Ivan Herrera RBI single to score Victor Scott II and cut the deficit to three. However, the home team always had a response, as Suarez lifted up his second home run of the ball game.

The Cardinals did plate two more to make it a two-run game, but couldn't find the magic for a comeback in the end.

With the loss, the birds on the bat sit a 51-49 overall, in fourth place in the National League Central standings. Dating back to before the All-Star break, St. Louis has lost 11 out of its last 15 games.

Up next - the Cardinals will look to get back on track with a road trip to Colorado. First pitch against the worst team in the league is set for 7:40 p.m. on Monday, July 21.
