Cardinals overcome weather delays, two-run deficit in series finale with Braves

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Cardinals survived a soggy Sunday afternoon to salvage its final series before the MLB All-Star Break.
Despite two weather delays, which paused the game for more than three combined hours, St. Louis (51-46) secured a 5-4 win over Atlanta (42-53) at Busch Stadium, avoiding a series sweep.
The Redbirds faced a 3-1 deficit in the fifth inning, but the contest's second weather delay allowed the team to regroup in the clubhouse. When the game resumed at 6:30 p.m., Willson Contreras tied the score in the home half of the frame with a two-RBI double. Then, José FermÃn crushed a go-ahead two-run shot, his first major league home run, to give the Cardinals an insurmountable 5-3 lead in the sixth inning.
Seven different players posted a hit for the Cardinals in Sunday's series finale, guided by a two-hit effort from Alec Burleson. Contreras and FermÃn also recorded two RBI's each.
Sonny Gray's start was cut short, due to the rain. The veteran right-hander pitched three innings and allowed just one run on three hits with five strikeouts. Ryan Helsley tallied his 19th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
Up next - The Cardinals will enjoy four days of rest before resuming the regular season on Friday, July 18 at 8:40 p.m. against the Diamondbacks.
