NEW YORK, N.Y. (KMIZ)

Behind a five-hit performance from Jordan Walker and a five-RBI effort from Lars Nootbaar, St. Louis bludgeoned New York's pitching staff to secure a 14-7 win, clinching a three-game series victory on Sunday. The Cardinals' collective 21-hit effort ended with the team improving their record back above the .500-mark.

This weekend's action also featured the Redbirds recording their first win at iconic Yankee Stadium since game five of the 1964 World Series.

Walker became the third-youngest Cardinals player in franchise history to record five hits in a single game, trailing only Frank Snyder and Rogers Hornsby. Walker also posted three RBI's and scored four times.

On Sunday, the Cardinals erased an early 2-1 deficit by scoring six unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth innings, highlighted by a pair of two-run shots from Walker and Luken Baker. Walker's first and Baker's second home runs of the season gave St. Louis a 7-2 lead.

Oliver Marmol's crew let that lead slip away, but after the Yankees tied the game in the 6th inning, the Cardinals responded with seven unanswered runs to end the game. Nootbaar was responsible for five of those seven runs, delivering a go-ahead, bases-clearing double and his ninth home run of the season in the seventh and ninth innings respectively. The Cardinals' left fielder finished the game with three hits.

Brendan Donovan and Paul Goldschmidt also both had three-hit performances, and every Cardinals player that walked up to the plate on Sunday posted at least one hit.

After its first contest of September, St. Louis sits five games behind Atlanta for the final wild card spot in the National League, trailing both the Mets and Cubs in the race to keep pace with the Braves.

Up next - The Cardinals close out their six-game road trip with a series against the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers. The first contest of this three-game series is scheduled to begin on Monday, Sept. 2 at 1:10 p.m.
