Cardinals score five unanswered runs, win series over Diamondbacks
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMIZ)
Despite trailing Arizona 1-0 for the first five innings of Wednesday's game, St. Louis rallied to score five unanswered runs in the final three frames to earn a 5-1 win over the Diamondbacks. Wednesday's win secured a series victory for the Cardinals and improved their record to 11-14 this season.
Christian Walker's sacrifice fly in the opening frame was the only run that crossed the plate for both teams during the first five innings of action. However, the Redbirds sparked a rally in the sixth inning, tying the game on a RBI single from Nolan Arenado and taking the lead on a wild pitch that allowed Willson Contreras to score. After Nolan Gorman padded that 2-1 lead with an RBI single in the seventh frame, St. Louis scored two more runs in the eighth inning, courtesy of a two-RBI double from Lars Nootbaar.
The Cardinals posted eight hits on Wednesday afternoon, including multi-hit performances from Brendan Donovan and Paul Goldschmidt.
Mizzou alum Kyle Gibson earned the win in this contest, giving up just one run on five hits and striking out six batters over six innings on the mound. JoJo Romero, Andrew Kittredge and Ryan Helsley each posted a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.
Up next - St. Louis is traveling to New York for a three-game set against the Mets. The first game of the series is scheduled for Friday, April 26 at 6:10 p.m.
