Cardinals avoid getting swept thanks to Jordan Walker heroics

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Cardinals and the Phillies held a tie into the eighth inning of Sunday's game, however, rookie Jordan Walker hit a tie-breaking home run to lift the red birds to a 6-5 win. Despite the win, St. Louis still lost the series to Philadelphia, 2-1.

The birds also avoided a season sweep from the Phillies, on Sunday, after losing the previous five meeting with the team from the city of brotherly love.

Walker played the hero in the end, but Paul Goldschmidt also hit an important, tie-breaking home run in the third inning, which put St. Louis up, 4-3. He extended his on-base streak to 13 games, as well.

John King earned the win on the hill for the Cardinals. He pitched for one inning and registered one strikeout, while allowing one run. Dakota Hudson actually got the start, but he let three runs go in his five innings of work.

Up next - St. Louis will host the rival Brewers on Monday, Sept. 18. First pitch is at 6:45 p.m.
