PHOENIX (KMIZ)

The Kansas City Chiefs already have one piece of hardware to load up on the plane back home to Missouri.

Last night quarterback Patrick Mahomes won his second-career MVP Award. He'll look to add the Lombardi Trophy to his checked baggage this weekend.

But he'll have to break a streak to do so.

MVP winners don't have the best odds when it comes to Super Bowls. The last 10 quarterbacks to win the MVP and advance to the Super Bowl have lost it.

Here are some notable examples:

  • 2017. Tom Brady wins MVP. Patriots lose to the Eagles.
  • 2016. Matt Ryan wins MVP. Falcons lose to the Patriots.
  • 2015: Cam Newton wins MVP. Panthers lose to the Broncos.

However, six quarterbacks have won the league MVP and the Super Bowl in the same year.  That includes Brett Farve, Joe Montana and Bart Starr.

Mahomes says don't let the accolades get to your head.

"Just be yourself, man," Mahomes told media in Arizona this week. "The Super Bowl is a huge game and everybody gets extremely excited for it, but at the end of the day it's just -- it's a football game that you're playing with your teammates, that you -- you've done all year long."
