Cardinals pitchers blank Marlins to avoid series sweep
MIAMI, Fl. (KMIZ)
Jack Flaherty pitched a shutout in his second straight start as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Miami Marlins 3-0 on Thursday night to avoid a series sweep.
St. Louis fell during the first three games of the series, two of which were decided by one run, including Wednesday's 10-9 loss that ended in a Miami walk off.
In Thursday's finale game, Flaherty struck out five, walked two and allowed nine hits. He also threw six scoreless innings against the New York Yankees last week and has lowered his ERA from 4.95 to 4.27 in the two starts.
Nolan Arenado’s two-out solo homer in the sixth put St. Louis ahead 1-0. It was Arenado’s 17th home run of the season and tied him with Nolan Gorman for the team lead. Gorman and Burleson also drove in runs on the day.
St. Louis sits at 36-51 on the season, which is 12.5 games out of first place in the NL Central.
Up next - the road trip continues for the last series before the All-Star break. St. Louis will be in Chicago for a three-game series with the White Sox. Game one will be Friday at 7:10 p.m.
