St. Louis Cardinals fall in high-scoring opener with Blue Jays
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMIZ)
The St. Louis Cardinals kicked off the 2023 season with a 10-9 home loss against the Blue Jays after Toronto put up a late two runs in the ninth inning.
The Red Birds entered the final inning ahead by one, but Ryan Helsley let up two runs to let the win slip away.
Nolan Arenado led things at the plate driving in three total runs on the day including two in the eighth inning to take the lead. Brendan Donovan and Paul Goldschidmt also brought in two runs each with both hitting two-run home runs.
Miles Mikolas started the game on the hill giving up three runs in the first inning and and five total in the outing off of 10 hits. He also recorded six strikeouts. Zach Thompson was one of five Cardinals who took the mound afterwards recording three strikeouts in a little over one inning on the rubber.
The Cardinals start the season 0-1, but will look to bounce back against Toronto Saturday at 1:15 p.m. as the opening series continues.
