Mizzou suffers reverse sweep against Oklahoma
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
No. 21 Mizzou Volleyball has lost three of its first four games of SEC action.
Despite holding a two-set advantage, the Tigers (9-6) lost to Oklahoma (11-3) in five sets at the Hearnes Center on Sunday afternoon. All five sets were decided by six points or less.
MU prevailed in the first two frames by final scores of 30-28 and 25-21, but the Tigers were unable to close out the victory. The Sooners rallied to force a winner-take-all fifth set with four- and five-point wins in the next two sets. Then, Oklahoma's newly-discovered momentum peaked in the final frame, assembling a lead as large as seven points in the game-deciding set.
The Tigers struggled to limit their visitor's offensive attack, surrendering 76 kills to the Sooners. Alexis Shelton (25) and Emoni Bush (18) combined for 43 of those kills, registering hitting percentages of .564 and .361 respectively. Collectively, Oklahoma posted a .401 hitting percentage against Mizzou.
Caylen Alexander finished with a team-high 18 kills, followed by Janet deMarrais with 11 kills. Alexander and Zoey Matias-Lopez each recorded three service aces to pace the Tigers while Maya Sands led the team in digs (16). However, MU ended the match with just a .273 hitting percentage.
Up next - Mizzou will travel to face No. 23 Florida on Friday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m.
