MU picks up win over Lindenwood, finishes 3-0 in Mizzou Invitational
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Dawn Sullivan's squad successfully defended its home court during its home-opening weekend. The Tigers closed out the Mizzou Invitational with a four-set win over Lindenwood, posting a perfect record in its first three games at the Hearnes Center this season.
Mizzou comfortably won each of the first two sets, defeating Lindenwood by scores of 25-17 and 25-16 respectively. However, MU stumbled in the third set, falling to the Lions following a set-clinching kill from Blair Oaks alum Autumn Bax. The Lindenwood freshman finished the contest with seven kills, which was second-best on the team.
The Tigers responded to that adversity in set four by claiming a 25-13 win, which was the team's best margin of victory in the match. In that final set, Mizzou posted a 10-0 run to quickly pull away with the lead, recording four kills and two aces during that span.
MU did suffer from self-inflicted wounds in Sunday's match, recording 31 total errors. 14 of those were service errors while the remaining 17 were attack errors.
Despite those mistakes, the Tigers outplayed the Lions in most categories, ending the night with 48 kills, 12 service aces and seven blocks.
Three different players had double-digit kills against Lindenwood, led by Jordan Iliff with 13 and closely followed by Mychael Vernon and Colleen Finney with 12 kills and 11 kills respectively. Finney led the team in blocks with three, and both Janet deMarrais and Marina Crownover finished the match with a game-high three service aces each.
Up next- MU has got one last non-conference road trip before kicking off SEC play. Sullivan and company will travel to compete in the Lipscomb Tournament in Nashville, starting with a battle against the hosting Bisons on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m.
