Mizzou surrenders late goal, loses second straight SEC showdown

LEXINGTON, Ky. (KMIZ)

Mizzou Soccer is returning to Columbia empty-handed.

The Tigers (4-5-1) committed a costly foul in the final minutes of Saturday's contest against Kentucky (8-3-0), leading to a successful penalty kick and a 1-0 loss at Bell Soccer Complex.

After both goalies held their opponents scoreless for more than 87 minutes of action, Kentucky's Tanner Strickland drew a foul on Shania Spriggs inside the box while driving towards the net, setting up a penalty kick in the 88th minute. Gabrielle Poretto capitalized on the opportunity, burying the game-deciding goal.

With the exception of the penalty kick, Kate Phillips recorded saves on each of her previous four opportunities, finishing 4-for-5 in attempts to increase her save percentage to .744 on the season.

Khadijah Cisse completed a shutout with two saves. Collectively, The Wildcats outshot the Tigers by a 14-5 margin.

Up next - Mizzou returns to Audrey J. Walton Soccer Stadium to host a top-15 team. The Tigers will face No. 12 Mississippi State on Friday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.
