Mizzou Soccer snaps SEC winless skid on senior day
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Mizzou Soccer has secured its first SEC win since Sept. 15 of last season. The Tigers rode the momentum of two early goals to a 2-0 victory over the Florida Gators on senior night.
The Tigers honored seven seniors before Sunday's game, including midfielders Milena Fischer, Leah Selm and Jenna McCormick, defenders Rachel Kutella and Ashlyn Mills and goalkeepers Bella Hollenbach and Kassidy Roshong.
MU found the back of the net twice in less than eight minutes of action. First, Olivia Chianelli scored for the first time this season off a deflection, following a corner kick from Fischer and a blocked header from Callaway Combs. Then, the Tigers were awarded a penalty kick after a second corner kick opportunity, and Kylee Simmons took advantage of it, scoring her third goal of the campaign.
Mizzou only recorded one more shot-on-goal in the game, but Kate Phillips proceeded to post the first shutout of her college career. The sophomore tallied nine total saves in the contest.
While MU did snap its 12-game winless skid in conference play, the Tigers were outshot by the Gators 20-7 and recorded six less shots-on-goal.
Up next - Mizzou hits the road again for an SEC showdown with Tennessee. The Tigers and the Volunteers are scheduled to play on Friday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m.
