Mizzou cruises past LIU, wins ninth consecutive game
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Mizzou Men's Basketball's winning streak has reached nine straight games.
The Tigers took care of business against Long Island University (LIU), winning their Saturday showdown with the Sharks 88-61 in the penultimate game of their current homestand.
MU and LIU traded buckets back-and-forth through the first media timeout, but the Tigers quickly rallied to build a lead. The Tigers posted a 14-0 scoring run, which included three-pointers from Aidan Shaw and Marques Warrick to gain a 13-point advantage.
From there, head coach Dennis Gates' group kept extending LIU's deficit. Mizzou nearly doubled up the Sharks in the first half, carrying a 45-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Trent Pierce took over the final seven minutes before the break, scoring 17 of his team's 19 points during that span to set a new season-high in scoring.
Mizzou ended the first half by shooting 57.7% from the floor and hitting seven of its 14 attempted three-pointers. Pierce was responsible for four of MU's first half triples while Warrick tallied two three-pointers.
MU's lead did not get much more lopsided in the second half, manufacturing a lead as 32 points in the contest. However, the Tigers still outscored the Sharks 43-37 during the last 20 minutes of action to earn a 27-point win.
Up next - Mizzou closes out its 10-game homestand with a battle against Jacksonville State. Tipoff for that contest is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m.
