Mizzou earns Music City Bowl bid, sits at No. 19 in final CFP rankings
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Mizzou Football is Music City Bowl bound.
Head Coach Eli Drinkwitz's group has punched a ticket to face Iowa in the Music City Bowl on Monday, Dec. 30 at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee, per an official announcement from the team. Kickoff time for this postseason matchup is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
"It's an honor to be selected to participate in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl," Drinkwitz said in a press release. "We're looking forward to the opportunity to play at Nissan Stadium in Nashville. It's a great market for our alumni and fanbase, and I know we'll have an excited crowd. Our team has worked extremely hard to achieve this goal, and we are looking forward to preparing and playing against a terrific Iowa squad. I'm just thankful I get to coach this special group of men for one more game this season."
The Tigers also checked in at No. 19 in the final College Football Playoff (CFP) rankings of the year, maintaining the same spot they were awarded after defeating Arkansas to end the regular season. Mizzou is the seventh-highest ranked SEC program in this set of rankings.
MU and Iowa's history dates back to the 1890s, but the two programs have only faced each other 13 total times and just once since 1911. The most recent meeting between the Tigers and Hawkeyes was in 2010 in the Insight Bowl, a postseason contest that ended in a 27-24 loss for Mizzou. Back in 2020, these two teams were scheduled to face each other in the same bowl game, but it was cancelled due to COVID-19.
Unranked Iowa finished its 2024 season with an 8-4 overall record and won six of its nine Big-10 Conference matchups. The Hawkeyes ended their regular season with a three-point win over Nebraska in a low-scoring affair.
Coach Drinkwitz holds a 1-2 all-time record in bowl games during his tenure with the Tigers. Most recently, he led his program to a 14-3 win over Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl during the 2023 season, capping off Mizzou's first 11-win campaign since 2014.
MU ended the 2024 regular season with a 9-3 overall record, reaching nine wins in a single campaign for just the second time in the last decade. Mizzou is also entering the postseason on a two-game winning streak, defeating Mississippi State and Arkansas in its final two regular season contests.
