Mizzou wins SEC opener 38-21, improves record to 5-0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (KMIZ)

The 23rd ranked Mizzou football team kept its undefeated record alive on Saturday after picking up a 38-21 win over Vanderbilt. This game was Mizzou's first SEC contest of the season.

Quarterback Brady Cook broke the SEC record for the most consecutive pass attempts without an interception in this game.

The Tigers grabbed the first lead of the game with about seven minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Mizzou put together a 14-play, 69-yard drive but had to settle for a 23-yard field goal by Harrison Mevis.

However, Vanderbilt was the first team to find the end zone at FirstBank Stadium. The Commodores took a 7-3 lead in the first quarter after Ken Seals scored a 6-yard rushing touchdown.

Mizzou responded on its next drive and began to build a big lead. The Tigers capped off a 12-play, 85-yard drive with a short touchdown run by Cody Schrader, giving Mizzou a 10-7 lead early in the second quarter.

Then, Cook closed out the first half with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Theo Wease Jr. with less than a minute left until halftime. Mizzou scored 14 unanswered points to end the first half.

Mizzou's lead swelled to as much as 17 points in the second half. The Tigers marched down the field on their opening drive of the third quarter and scored their third touchdown of the game on a 18-yard touchdown pass from Cook to Luther Burden III. That touchdown pass was the only score in the third quarter.

The Tigers and the Commodores both added two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Cook tossed a 44-yard touchdown to Marquis Johnson and a 17-yard touchdown to Burden III in the final quarter of play.

Cook finished the game with 395 passing yards and four touchdowns. He also completed 33 of his 41 passes in the contest.

Burden III had a team-high 11 receptions for 140 receiving yards. He also caught two touchdowns.

Wease Jr. also had a strong performance in Mizzou's SEC opener, making 10 receptions for 118 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Up next - the Tigers will host LSU at Faurot Field on Saturday, Oct. 7. That game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
