Mizzou posts win over Georgia in extra innings, evens three-game series
ATHENS, Ga. (KMIZ)
Mizzou Baseball has captured its first SEC road win of the season, defeating Georgia 6-5 in extra innings at Foley Field. Friday's victory sealed Mizzou's fifth conference win of 2024 and forces a rubber match with the Bulldogs on Saturday.
Georgia held the lead for most of the game, entering the seventh inning with a 4-1 lead. However, the Tigers sparked a four-run rally in that frame with an RBI single from Jeric Curtis and a three-run blast from Helias alum Trevor Austin. Austin's team-leading ninth home run of the season gave Mizzou a 5-4 lead.
The Bulldogs forced extra innings by scoring a run in the bottom of the ninth inning on an RBI double from Kolby Branch, but one inning later, Jedier Hernandez retook the lead for the Tigers by sneaking a hit into the outfield to score an unearned run. Ryan Magdic proceeded to shut down Georgia in the home half of the 10th inning, striking out three of the four batters he faced in that frame to end the game.
Magdic had a magnificent relief effort on the mound for Mizzou, striking out a game-high eight batters over 3.1 innings. The graduate student also allowed just three hits and one run during his outing.
Austin finished the contest with a game-high 3 RBI's. Austin, Hernandez and Drew Culbertson all ended Friday's action with multi-hit performances, collectively accounting for six of Mizzou's 11 hits.
Up next - The Tigers have their sights set on earning back-to-back SEC series victories. Mizzou's rubber match with Georgia is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 13 in Athens.
