No. 8 Mizzou gymnastics’ season ends at Lexington Regional Final

KMIZ

LEXINGTON, Ky. (KMIZ)

The No. 8 Mizzou gymnastics team will not advance to its second-straight NCAA Championship Semifinal, after falling just 0.225 points short of a ticket to Fort Worth, on Sunday.

With only the top two teams advancing to the Championship Semifinal, it went down to the wire for head coach Shannon Welker and his team. The Tigers finished just behind No. 9 Arkansas, as the Razorbacks will make their return to Fort Worth for the first time since 2024.

You can find a full look at the final team scores below.

  1. No. 1 Oklahoma - 198.350
  2. No. 9 Arkansas - 197.450
  3. No. 8 Mizzou - 197.225
  4. No. 18 Ohio State - 196.700

Despite the Tigers' season coming to an end, the reigning SEC Specialist of the Year will represent Mizzou down in Texas. Junior Hannah Horton will be the individual qualifier for the uneven bars from the Lexington Regional, sharing the event crown with a score of 9.925, on Sunday.

How it happened:

Coach Welker's team got off to a strong start in the first rotation, on Sunday, recording a score of 49.300 on the uneven bars. Of course, Horton led that event for the Tigers, but three of her teammates scored a 9.850 to help put the Tigers just .100 points out of second place.

However, Mizzou's worst rotation of the afternoon came next. MU posted a 49.250 on the balance beam, with scores ranging from 9.825 to 8.875. No Tigers surpassed the 9.9 threshold, as MU left that rotation with some work to do, trailing the Razorbacks by 0.125.

They did make up some ground on their best rotation. The fab floor struck again, as two Tigers surpassed the 9.9 range. Junior Kennedy Griffin led Mizzou on the floor with a career best 9.950, which was closely followed by Horton's 9.925. Thanks to that big performance in the floor, Mizzou had an opportunity to overtake the Razorbacks in the fourth and final rotation.

Sitting just 0.025 points behind No. 9 Arkansas, Coach Welker and his squad headed to the vault to close the Lexington Regional Final. Mizzou's scores on that apparatus ranged from 9.825 to 9.850, but they needed just a little bit more to get past the rival Razorbacks.

All-in-all, the Tigers had just three scores of 9.900 or better out in Lexington, Kentucky, which led to their season coming to an end in the program's sixth-straight NCAA Regional Final.

Up next - Horton will compete individually in the NCAA Championship Semifinals in Fort Worth, Texas. The action will run from April 16-18.
