Brown suffers shoulder injury, Chiefs drop preseason opener to Jaguars
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (KMIZ)
Kansas City's road trip to Jacksonville yielded more than just a 26-13 loss to kick off the team's 2024 preseason schedule. It also ended with wide receiver Marquise "Hollywood" Brown suffering a shoulder injury on the first play from scrimmage after landing awkwardly on the ground while making a catch.
Following Saturday's game, head coach Andy Reid said Brown is nursing a sternoclavicular joint dislocation injury and was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated. Reid mentioned it's the same injury Tyreek Hill suffered in 2019, which sidelined the wide receiver for four weeks.
"I think he'll miss some time," Reid said at Saturday's postgame press conference. "We'll just see where it's at. They're kind of going through it right now, and we'll know more later on."
Patrick Mahomes and the first-team offense took the field for one drive in Jacksonville. On the first possession of the game, the Chiefs quarterback led Kansas City into field goal range, leading to a 45-yard kick from Harrison Butker, who just signed a four-year contract extension to become the highest-paid kicker in the National Football League. Mahomes ended the contest 3-for-4 with 27 passing yards.
The Chiefs' first touchdown of the preseason had to wait until the second quarter. Carson Steele became the first player to plunge across the goal line for Kansas City this season, scoring a one-yard touchdown on fourth down to tie the game. Steele strengthened his case for a spot on the 53-man roster on Saturday, posting a team-high 29 rushing yards on four carries.
Quarterback Chris Oladokun recorded a team-high 85 yards on 7-for-10 passing in this contest while wide receiver Nikko Remigio led the Chiefs in receiving with three catches for 35 yards. Butker also ended the game 2-for-2 on field goals, drilling kicks from 45 yards and 33 yards out.
While there were some bright spots, the Chiefs also identified some phases of the game they must clean up, especially on special teams. Kansas City allowed a 73-yard kickoff return ahead of Jacksonville's first drive of the game, eventually leading to a nine-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Lawrence to Travis Etienne. Reid's team also suffered a safety late in the first half on a kickoff, which extended Jacksonville's lead in the contest.
Similarly, the Chiefs defense gave up 246 passing yards and 102 rushing yards over the course of the game. However, Steve Spagnuolo's group did have success inflicting pressure on Jacksonville, forcing five tackles for loss and two sacks from Jack Cochrane and Cole Christiansen.
Up next - the Chiefs travel back to Kansas City to close out their final four training camp practices ahead of their next preseason game against the Lions. Kickoff at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 17 at 3 p.m.
