Kansas City Chiefs return to training camp after rest day

ST. JOESPH, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Kansas City Chiefs were back on the training camp field at Missouri Western Wednesday after having a day of rest on Tuesday.

"It's always tough coming from a day off, but the tempo was great," said head coach Andy Reid.

With just seven more practice games until the Chiefs open up preseason on the road in New Orleans, Reid has the competition is at an all-time high.

"With the locker room the way it is, the guys know what the plan is and what this does for you when you come out and work hard," Reid said. "I've got good leadership there and you can't do it without that. You can't do it without guys buying in and understanding it. They're willing to work and push themselves which is paying off for them."

Patrick Mahomes is coming off of an MVP season, and in the meantime is working with some new weapons on his offense.

Justyn Ross was out during his rookie season with an injury, but in year two of training camp, Ross has been a key target downfield for the offense.

"You can tell he's been in the offense for a year now, obviously making big plays and he's getting more and more involved in those first team reps," Mahomes said about Ross. "A guy that I have a lot of hope for that he can be a really good player in offense."

"He had a good offseason and then he worked his tail off here and he just needs to keep doing that. It's how you answer the bell every day and push through it, he has the right mindset to do it," Reid said.

Ross has been compared to Maquez Valdes-Scantling. He said on Wednesday that he's going to bring a new element to the already high-powered group.

"Explosive dude, tall dude, can go get a jump ball, run pretty good routes, I feel like I can bring a lot to the table," Ross said.

With all-pro defensive lineman Chris Jones still not at training camp while he awaits a new contract agreement, the defense is looking for other veterans to step up.

Defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi is entering his sixth season in KC and says the show must go on.

"Whoever's here, we're here to work so at the end of the day we have to focus on what we can focus on," Nnadi said.
