Four mid-Missouri athletes bring home gold on final day of MSHSAA wrestling championships
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Day four of the Missouri state high school wrestling tournament crowned four local student athletes champions, with two schools bringing home podium finishes.
Hickman high school secured back-to-back second place finishes at the state meet, following Liberty once again. This time the deficit was much closer however, only losing by 2.5 points, 161.5-159. Helias Catholic also left Mizzou Arena with some hardware, taking home the class three bronze. It marks the first time the Crusaders have finished on the podium since 2022.
Luke Hayden became a three-time state champion with a come from behind 4-2 decision victory against Lafayette's Carter Welsh. This was the first time winning gold at 175 pounds, and will have a chance to join Hank Benter and J'den Cox as the third Kewpie to win four consecutive state titles.
Senior Jordan Fincher also brought gold home to Columbia, ending his season 36-0. He ended his high school career on top, picking up a major decision victory over Fort Zumwalt North's Cole Aguirre.
Jefferson City also brought home a championship at 150 with Deegan Mitchell. He finished the year with a perfect record of 46-0 after securing a decision win in the title bout. The final champion from mid-Missouri was Helias' Zyan Knollmeyer, securing a decision win at heavyweight for his first state championship title.
