MSHSAA state wrestling tournament gets underway

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

More than four dozen of mid-Missouri's high school wrestlers punched their tickets to the semi finals of the MSHSAA wrestling championships.

After the first two rounds of competition, 49 student athletes still have their eyes set on a state championship. Moberly's Breanne Gibbs is hoping to become a four time state champion, while Fulton's Mackinzie Brewer, Centralia's Rex Bryson, and North Callaway's Collin Moore also look to defend their state titles.

In the team races, Centralia leads the field with 63 points in the Class 1 Boys competition. The Panthers still have four athletes in contention for the title, hoping to finish the job on Thursday. Marceline is just behind them with 57.5 points in second, and the North Callaway Thunderbirds also find themselves in the top five with 47 points.

Brookfield is the highest mid-Missouri team in the Class 1 Girls tournament. The Bulldogs have three ladies set to compete in the semifinals. They trail Kearney, Ste. Genevieve, and DeSoto for the team title.

Mexico is the front runner in the Class 2 Boys championship with 76 points, a full 12 ahead of second place. Father Tolton is also still in the mix, currently sitting fourth with 61 points, just a half point behind Seneca in third.
